From time to time, we get to see DIY photography ideas that are so funny, yet so brilliant. Using a beer helmet as a speedlight holder is definitely one of them. A Japanese photographer who goes by the nickname @nishihiro0312 uses this cheap party helmet to light his images, and he mounts speedlights and even diffusers onto it.
Nishihiro writes that mounting speedlights to the party helmet reduces the weight on his arm when he shoots events. For “Mickey Mouse look” (and some nice, soft light), it’s possible to add diffusers to the speedlights. I assume this may also come in handy for photographing children because it looks so freakin’ funny. And who doesn’t like Mickey Mouse?
Finally, Nishihiro uses the helmet for its original purpose (well, partially at least). He mounts a single speedlight on one side, and his favorite beverage on the other. This way he can refresh without having to stop taking photos. Now that’s efficiency for ya! I have to admit, this is my favorite DIY idea ever since I saw a light box made out of a trash can. I strongly suggest you get yourself a beer helmet and try this one out, at least just for fun. It may look funny, but hey, it does the trick! [lead image credits: Joey Coleman]
